Strictly speaking (if you believe the dictionary) tunics are knee-length loose fitting items of clothing. But designers have done their bit to alter this definition, by creating tunics that, whilst loose fitting, are not necessarily knee length. Furthermore, the original inference of the word tunic was something rather plain. Even 50 years ago, when tunics were worn by school children to play various sports, these tops were, in a word, plain. They usually had either round or square necklines, and were cut without any imagination at all. The idea was that they would allow girls to move easily while wearing them.
