We can probably thank full-figured celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Queen Latifah for the vast selection of plus size evening wear that is currently available both in real-time shops and in virtual Internet stores. After all a few decades ago larger ladies found it really difficult to find clothing that fitted them, let alone well designed, flattering plus size evening blouses.

Now Oprah even has a web site dedicated to finding larger sized clothing. But it really isn’t that difficult (even without Oprah’s help) since more and more fashion designers and ordinary commercial fashion houses are aware that bigger sized people are an important – if not vital – part of their market. While the skinny models may be seen on most of the runways, there are many more plus size people who actually buy clothes.

When it comes specifically to plus size evening blouses, you will find a huge range of different types that you can team with smart pants or skirts. I searched the Internet to see what kind of plus size evening blouses are available and found:

  • Hand embroidered plus size blouses.
  • Intriguing coin tops (made in China) that are made from a type of chiffon fabric that is beaded, decorated with coins, and has an unusual crocheted trim.
  • Gorgeous plus size blouses made of slightly see-through chiffon material. Skirts are available in the same fabric.
  • A lot of different types of silk blouses, including silk satin, silk crepe and silk georgette.
  • Plus size beaded blouses and similar designs encrusted with sequins.

and more …

I also discovered that there are some designer lines that while not officially “plus size” in fact do accommodate larger women, many of whom have a distinctive hour-glass or sometimes a pear shape. Unfortunately though these usually only extend to no bigger than extra large sizes, or 16 (US).

If you are shopping for evening wear, and don’t yet have something to team with the plus size evening blouses that have taken your fancy, look for a monochromatic skirt that is flattering to a larger figure. Forget old-fashioned tented skirts and look for something like the gray skirt in one of Rachel Roy’s old collections (2007 in fact). It has a tailored waist with a loose pleat that looks good on most women. Once you have the skirt (this design or another), you can team it with a huge number of different plus size evening blouses, including Rachel Roy’s gorgeous sparkly cashmere tee-shirt (from the same collection). What is even better is that you can wear the same skirt with completely different plus size blouses during the day, for a totally different look.

Rachel Roy is, of course, one of Oprah’s favorite designers. Other followers include Sharon Stone, Lucy Liu and Penelope Cruz. So she’s a good fashion mogul to follow. In the 2007 collection, there were some other quite nice designs that will suit the larger figure, particularly plus size blouses. Apart from the sparkly cashmere, there was:

  • A bright yellow blouse with a ruffled front, fitting under the bust and then pleating out to create the effect of a mini dress. Worn over casual pants this style is perfect for day, and over a smart skirt it becomes a gorgeous plus size evening blouse.
  • Several classic white blouses, also suitable for day wear or for use as evening blouses.
  • A silver grey, chiffon-type frilly blouse, loose enough to fit the plus size needs, but with a long tailored cuff making it stylish for all needs.

It great to discover that Rachel Roy is one of those fabulous designers who keeps women’s curvy hour-glass shapes in mind when you goes to work creating a new design. She has been quoted as saying: “I like to design clothes so you don’t know what’s going on under there”. So if you want some inspiration, look out for her designs.
